It's not our abilities that define us, but our choices..

I was dying from metabolic syndrome fueled by fast food and stress. I took a hard look at my life and realized that I was headed down a road that was leading to a “house of pain and or death”. My doctors were no help, so I immersed myself in books and videos towards finding a lifestyle change versus a new diet. Yeah, you heard me correctly, no more diets for me. On this journey, I found that carbs, fat, and protein were each selectively deemed unhealthy depending on the person pitching.
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions — increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels — that occur together, increasing your risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Nearly 78 million adults and 13 million children in the United States deal with the health and effects of obesity every day. The solution is simple right, “take in fewer calories a day, while cranking up the calorie-burning process with regular exercise”?
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”- Hippocrates
This statement drove me to seek a means to take advantage of the healing power of food. I came to the conclusion a whole food, plant-based lifestyle is the solution. Studies have shown that even in cases where individuals were genetically predisposed to a disease, making this lifestyle change can prevent and manage their condition such as cancer, heart diseases, and diabetes. There is real scientific data that supports this lifestyle and the results.
I created this site to share my experiences, the science, and recipes that are working for me. Creativity has been key to successfully modifying my lifestyle, as I probably wouldn’t have been successful eating what comes to mind for most for “plant-based”, salads. I’ll be adding recipes that I enjoy and are keeping me on the path to a healthier life.
My first 30-day commitment to this lifestyle lowered my blood pressure to a point where my medication was reduced significantly, and I lost 25 pounds (almost a pound a day). The amazing part is I don’t feel hungry or have cravings for sugar salt or animal products.
I have not committed to a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle nor am I on a diet. I do believe there is evidence that a primarily raw plant based diet limiting animal fats and proteins to less than 5 – 10% of your caloric intake will result in a healthier life. Hence, I have chosen to make the aforementioned change in my life and follow my food pyramid with poultry, fish, and meat eaten rarely. The Bible also supports a wide variety of food and supports moderation calling over indulgence a sin.
This site’s information is based on research done to help me battle metabolic syndrome and the related diseases. The goal is to lessen the confusion perpetrated by the food industry and live healthier lives. This site is dedicated to what works for our family and not intended to advise anyone.
The Basics
How to Get Started
One step at a time...
What to eat and why?
Whole-foods are fruits, vegetables, tubers, whole grains, and legumes; and it excludes or minimizes meat (including chicken and fish), dairy products, and eggs, as well as highly refined foods like bleached flour, refined sugar, and oil.
The food is delicious!
Don’t think about deprivation or removing meat from your diet. Rather add 1000 calories of salads / grain bowls with legumes, and starchy vegetables to your diet and naturally moderate your animal fats and protein intake.
Be prepared for success!
Try to set up your life so that your food-related decisions are minimized and the healthiest choice is also the easiest. Stock your kitchen with the healthy, plant based foods you want to eat and get rid of the processed foods, sugar, and dairy.
Keep an Open Mind
The abundance of plant foods that exist in the world is mind-boggling! And the variety of ways to prepare them is incomprehensible. Imagine the possibilities and don’t discount a food immediately, look for other ways to prepare it.
Don’t Let Yourself Get Hungry
Always be ready with snacks so you can avoid feeling “hungry,” the moment when you’re most likely to veer off course. Fatigue and cravings can intensify during periods of hunger.
Focus on yourself..
Know that the first few weeks will take some work, but if you can support yourself in as many ways as possible so you repeat the behavior as frequently as possible, you’ll be paid back as it becomes habit that much more quickly.
